My Advert was on Rexona Deodorant, the main purpose of my advert was for People who play sports or stink to stay hygienic and healthy. I believe I did achieve this as in my advert the protagonist was asking a person “if he wanted to play football” And the other person told him he stinks, the next time he applied the product and the other person asked the protagonist if he wanted to play football. This will help convince the audience to use the product.

 

My Advert follows many codes and conventions of similar Rexona Adverts, such as where a problem occurs and then the product solves the problem, my advert is also suitable for people of all ages as it isn’t inappropriate. My primary target audience will be Teenagers and Sporty people.

 

I wanted my advert to not be exactly like similar adverts but have some codes & conventions of other Rexona Adverts, but I wanted my advert to be unique, after doing my research I saw that dialogue in a Rexona advert is rare, so I used dialogue in my advert along with background music.

 

One of the things that Rexona adverts did was many short and constantly switch shots as it made the pace professional, this would keep the audience focused as the angles of the same scene constantly changed.

 

I used Premiere pro as my editing software and the main editing technique used by me was match cuts which is basically using different angles and shots of the same scene. It keeps the audience interested as match cuts build up suspense because they are fast paced.

 

I used many different shots in my advert, I mainly used medium shots as they capture most of the scene with the characters in it, I even used Close ups & Long shots as they are extremely helpful shots. Long shots are used to show the setting of place and the character in the place, Close up is very effective as it focuses on the detail of an object or person.

 

The location of where my advert took place was Dunes hotel apartments, it was well suited place which gave permission to film, It worked well as the theme of my advert was to avoid stinking which was shown how the protagonist leaves the house stinking and is told he stinks and then he applies the product and is asked to play football.

 

As for sound I used instrumental rock music and it suited this type of advert well and for dialogue, I wanted it to look natural. I even kept the elevator noise in the advert, so it would look like something that is natural.

 

For lighting I didn’t need to use any equipment as the lighting in the elevator was bright and allowed me to focus well on the characters, and the lighting in the bedroom was manual control so I could put whatever lighting I felt suited well.

 

The messages in my advert were very simple and blunt, it basically means if you stink use Rexona and you won’t stink, as in the advert the Main character is told he stinks and when he applies the product the same person who told him he stinks asked him to play football with him.

 

I challenged Todorovs narrative structure and started with disequilibrium (Protagonist being told he stinks) then slowly shifting to equilibrium (After protagonist applies the product and is asked to play football with the same person who told him he stinks).

 

One of the theories used by me was Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, Self-esteem was used as the protagonist needed to feel good about himself especially after being told he stinks, He applies the product to feel confident and good about himself.

 

Many things went to plan and worked out perfectly in Pre-production and Post production, Getting the equipment such as a Camera, Tripod, Product, Software’s etc. Even getting the actors together was easy and I believe my choice of actors worked perfectly with the advert.

 

Finally, after making the advert I have learnt many new things such as camera movements and editing techniques like match cuts and many different terminologies, I learnt how to draw and write a storyboard as well as learning a lot about my product Rexona.

 

Overall I believe I achieved my goal and learnt a lot of new things which will be helpful for me later on in studies.
